Troyer Wins Medalist Honors At Section; Squires 5th
12 Jun 2009
Despite graduating Friday night, high school is not quite finished for Josh Troyer.
The Manchester High School senior not only advanced to regional competition, Troyer won medalist honors with the low score at the Warsaw Sectional with a 75.
As a team, the Squires finished fifth with a 338, just missing out on a chance to move on as a team.
Warsaw easily won the sectional with a 308, followed by Tippecanoe Valley, who shot a 326.
Triton and Bremen tied for third with a 335, but Triton won the tiebreaker with their fifth golfer outscoring Bremen’s 90-92.
Culver Military Academy was sixth with 345, Plymouth and Southwood tied at 347, Wawasee was eighth with 348, Northfield was 10th with 350, Wabash was 11th with 379, and Culver Community was 12th with 423.
Troyer will advance to regional competition at Orchard Ridge on Thursday.
“It still hasn’t really sunk in,” Troyer said of finishing first overall. “It was my lowest competitive round ever.”
His previous low this year was a 77 at South Shore.
“I got lucky on a chip-in on six to save par after going into a hazard, and that got my round going,” Troyer said. “I think my putting was the best it has been all year.”
Troyer came up big on the back nine, sinking a six foot putt for birdie on 11 and an eight foot putt for birdie on 17.
Despite moving on individually, Troyer said he and his teammates were frustrated they didn’t move on as a team.
“For us to shoot 338 is pretty good,” he said. “But, we felt we could have been in the top three.”
Matt Budnik shot a 43-41-84, Kyle Lahman shot a 47-41-88, and Scott Spaulding shot a 42-49-91 for Manchester’s top four scores. Aaron Olinger added a 50-50-100.
But it was Troyer’s 37-38-75 that keeps his dream alive of advancing to state.
Troyer will tee off at 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning at Orchard Ridge in Fort Wayne.
