14 May 2009

The MHS softball team lost their TRC opener to Tippecanoe Valley 7-3 last week.
Manchester led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Vikings scored six runs in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. Manchester fought back with two in the top of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough.
Hannah Little led the Squires at the plate going 3-3 with two RBI.
Jama Runkel struck out nine despite the loss.
Garrett Invitational
The MHS softball team kept it close in all three games, but fell short, going 0-2 at the Garrett Invitational.
In the first game, Manchester fell to Garrett 11-7.
The Lady Squires led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but Garrett put up eight runs in the fourth, and added two more in the fifth to take control of the game.
Jama Runkel took the loss on the mound.
At the plate, Hannah Little went 3-4, while Meika Kennedy had four RBI and Makayla Sainsbury added three RBI.
In game two, the Lady Squires lost a heartbreaker to Bishop Dwenger 7-6 in 13 innings.
Manchester scored a run in each of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th, but Dwenger matched them run for run, and got the win with one run in the bottom of the 13th.
“In the first game, we made both physical and mental errors, which led to big innings,” coach Todd Volk said. “Against Dwenger, we eliminated the big inning by minimizing those mistakes. Even though we ended up on the short end, we saw a lot more positives.”
Katie Bowers led the way with four hits, while Meika Kennedy had three.
Loss To Rochester
The softball team outhit Rochester 8-7, but the only numbers on the scoreboard that counted went in favor of the Lady Zebras in a 6-4 win.
Manchester took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Rochester scored three in the third and three in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Manchester scored two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth, but couldn’t get over the hump.
Bowers led the way at the plate with two hits, including a home run. Allison Mussey and Kennedy both added two hits as well.
The softball team will host North Miami on Wednesday, Wabash on Friday, will be at Taylor for a doubleheader on Saturday, and will be at Northfield on Monday.
