The boys’ golf team ended their match with Huntington North tied at 170-170, but lost on the first tie-breaker rule, which matches the fifth highest scores from each team. Huntington North’s fifth player, Jordan Sweet, edged Manchester’s Aaron Olinger 48-50.
“We had some good rounds of golf from Josh Troyer and Kyle Lahman today,” coach Gary Goshert said. “We didn’t get the low 40s scores we’ve been getting from the entire team, though. We need to see that come back.”
Troyer shot a 40, while Lahman turned in a 41 for the Squires.
Scott Spaulding shot a 44, Matt Budnik shot a 45, Olinger finished with a 50, and Devon Simmons shot a 51.
The JV team lost to Huntington North 181-224.
Tyler Watson shot a 49, Kyle McLaughlin shot a 54, Josh Hanback shot a 56, Aaron Johnson shot a 65, Calvin Barnett shot a 66, and Jacob Kincaid shot a 71.
Loss To Wawasee
In windy, rainy conditions, the Wawasee Warriors beat the Squires 158-172.
“Wawasee is one of the strongest teams in this part of the state,” Goshert said. “We had some good scores today, but couldn’t compete with Wawasee’s depth.”
Troyer and Lahman both shot 41 for the Squires, while Spaulding and Olinger both shot 45. Simmons shot a 46, and Watson shot a 51.
For the JV, McLaughlin and Johnson both shot 52, Hanback shot a 55, Barnett shot a 58, and Kincaid shot a 68.
Wawasee Invitational
The Manchester Squires played in the tough Wawasee Invitational and finished 12th out of 15 teams.
Homestead won with a 301, Chesterton was second with a 302, and Wawasee was third with a 305.
“This is the toughest field of teams we will see all year,” Goshert said. “It’s good for us to play in this type of invitational.”
Josh Troyer led the Squires with a 41-36-77, while Kyle Lahman shot a 43-40-83.
Spaulding shot a 44-44-88, Budnik shot a 47-45-92, and Olinger shot a 44-48-92.
“Troyer and Lahman both had very solid rounds of golf,” Goshert said. “At this point in the season, the team is having trouble getting that third and fourth solid score to create a consistent team effort.”
