24 Apr 2008
The Manchester High School boys’ golf team improved to 2-0 in dual matches with a 174-241 win over West Noble last week.
Brecken Kennedy earned medalist honors with a 41, while Andrew Chinworth turned in a 42. Josh Troyer shot a 44, David Cable shot 47, and Matt Budnik shot a 55.
“We had three solid scores out of the top five golfers, but putting and chipping kept us from breaking into the 160s,’ head coach Gary Goshert said.
Three Way Win
The golf team made it 4-0 with a three way win over Lakewood Park and Churubusco. Manchester shot a solid 160, while Lakewood Park shot a 188, and Churubusco shot 204 at Eel River Golf Course.
Kennedy once again earned medalist honors, sharing it with Chinworth, who both shot 39 on the day. Troyer and Scott Spaulding both shot 41, and Cable finished with a 42 on the par-35 front nine.
“We had balanced scoring with good depth,” Goshert said. “That really helped us shoot in the 160s. Good day of golf for the boys.”
The JV also shot a solid round of golf, shooting a 179.
Budnik and Derek Jones both shot 43, Sam Thomas shot a 46, and Kyle Lahman and Devon Simmons both shot 47.
Whitko Invitational
The Squires finished second at the Whitko Invitational last Saturday at Sycamore Golf Club.
Wawasee won the tournament with a 303, while the Squires finished with a 330. Triton was third with a 337, Whitko was fourth with a 339, Fairfield was fifth with a 346, Tippecanoe Valley was sixth with a 354, Northfield was seventh with a 366, New Prairie was eighth with a 370, Wabash was ninth with a 378, and Marion was 10th with a 430.
Cable led the Squires with a 41-39-80. Kennedy shot a 41-43-84, Troyer shot a 45-38-83, Chinworth shot a 44-40-84, and Budnik shot a 46-42-88.
“Conditions were tough with the rain, but we showed very good resilience in battling the weather and finishing second,” Goshert said. “The top four scores were pretty close, which showed solid consistency and depth.”
The golf team will be at Southshore to face Wawasee on Thursday, and be back at Southshore on Saturday for the Wawasee Invitational.
