Bourne Scores 33 In Basketball Win Over Alexandria
06 Dec 2007
Thirty three points from Dan Bourne, including 20 in the third quarter, helped propel the Manchester Squires to its first win of the season, 65-43 over Alexandria.
Bourne led all scorers with 33 points, and scored 20 of Manchester’s 21 points in the third quarter to turn a close game into a 17 point lead heading into the fourth.
“Dan shot the ball really well, and he really didn’t force too many shots,” Manchester coach Gary Goshert said. “Most of his shots were within the rhythm of our offense.”
Manchester raced out to a 9-2 lead, and held a 15-8 lead late in the first quarter, but Alexandria went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-15 lead midway through the second.
“We kind of started rushing our shots in the second quarter,” Goshert said. “We struggled with that in our first two games, and we need to quit doing that. When we run our offensive plays, we usually seem to get good looks.”
After a Manchester time out, the Squires slowed things down, and closed out the half on a 12-3 run to take a 27-20 lead.
Aaron Medley scored six straight points for the Squires, including one on a offensive rebound put back, and the other two on assists from Cornelius Cuffy and David Cable.
Cable hit two free throws, and Bourne scored inside to cap off a 10-0 run.
Zach Yeagy stopped the run with a three pointer, but Corey Thomas found Cable inside for a 27-20 lead.
“I liked how we settled down and started getting into our stuff,” Goshert said. “Alexandria has some good, scrappy players, and we just had to figure out a way to stop number 24 (Zach Yeagy). We did a good job of communicating, and adjusting on the court.”
Yeagy led Alexandria with 19 points, while his brother, Bobby Yeagy had 10 points.
The third quarter was all Bourne, who hit from all areas of the floor, including two three pointers, and two three point plays.
Medley scored the first point of the half with a 1-2 trip to the free throw line, but Bourne showed all of his offensive weapons in the third quarter.
Bourne scored on an offensive rebound, then hit a 22 foot three pointer.
Jordan Baker and Matt Johnson scored back to back baskets to stop an 8-0 Squire run, but Bourne scored two more on offensive rebound put backs, the second resulting in a three point play.
Zach Yeagy nailed another three pointer, but Bourne responded with a three pointer and another offensive rebound put back for a 43-27 Squire lead.
Bobby Yeagy hit two straight, but Bourne closed out the quarter with a three point play, and a 10 footer, both on assists from Nolan Holloway.
“When Dan is on, he is awfully hard to stop,” Goshert said. “His teammates did a good job of finding the hot hand. Sometimes it is Dan, and sometimes it will be another player.
“We had a lot of players step up and play well,” he continued. “Aaron Medley and David Cable both scored in double figures, and played good defense, and our guards did a really nice job against their pressure. Corey Thomas came in off the bench and really got us going with some heads up plays.”
The Squires took a 48-31 lead into the fourth quarter, but Alexandria wasn’t finished.
The Tigers gave it one more push, cutting a 52-31 Squire lead to 53-41 with a 10-1 run, but it was too little, too late, and the Squires finished the game with a 12-2 run, and outscored the Tigers 17-12 in the fourth for the 65-43 win.
